Someone suggested - and so it just dawned on me - that this song is likely about asexuality, and the problems that can arise when a couple doesn’t understand what’s happening (see, also, the book I’d Rather Eat Chocolate, even though the writer doesn’t realize she’s likely asexual).
I highlighted some of the parts that made me think about this.
I’m especially intrigued by the song asking if Jimmy’s sexual at all. This opens the door for the idea, IMO.
Here are the lyrics:
And Lowiza thinks that years of pride remain
And Lowiza thinks that Jimmy will participate
Jimmy you’ve been with her since you’re twenty
And you’ve been faithful to her and your children
But your passions don’t exist in your bedroom (your bedroom)
And you tried to curb the sweat, but you can’t get intimate and you’re losing, and you’re losing
And Lowiza thinks that Jimmy’s urge is inept
And Lowiza thinks that this is what happens to men
And Lowiza thinks that Jimmy’s urge is inept
And Lowiza thinks that this is what happens to men
She wonders: Jimmy, Jimmy, are you sexual?
Jimmy just a dog, Jimmy just a cat
Jimmy doesn’t know. Can’t you hear them sigh?
Won’t you know they’re wrong? Can’t you hear them sigh?
Oh Jimmy, you’re sixty, you’re still married (still married)
The kids are gone, they don’t need you in the home
But I love her, you love her, yes I still love her
But you cant stay home if you can’t be intimate
No no, you can’t stay home if you can’t oh-oh
She wonders: Jimmy, Jimmy, who’s the sexual?
Jimmy just a dog, Jimmy just a cat
Jimmy can’t you stay?
Jimmy don’t you stay?
Jimmy, people sigh
Sigh a lot!
